Olympics, Rio 2016 comes to an end. America, Britain and China take 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the medal league with it was joy, disappointment, disbelief, tears and smiles.
The cost of the Rio Olympics is less than what London spent on the Olympics 2012. Rio spent £12 billion, in context, Brazil is going through an economic decline the worse in two decades. which begs the question is the olympics value for money for two weeks of sport? Would the people of Brazil agree with me if i said no? Brazil isn’t a stranger to poverty, could the £12 billion be better spent elsewhere to improve the lives of ordinary people? Of course it could, the Olympics will always split opinion, the vast amounts of money spent on hosting these games vs the people living in poverty.
Now we await another 4 yrs for the games to be hosted in Tokyo, as Tokyo looks to out do the previous host and put on a lavish show for the world to see. I can’t help thinking, maybe using existing infrastructure would be better served for generations to come. The vast sums of money spent on hosting the Olympics is obscene, when poverty is rife.
On that note however, congratulations to Rio for hosting a great Olympics and to all the athletes who gave their all, well done, until 2020, train hard.
